BLÜCHER
Blücher is a thrilling historical drama about a defining moment in Norway's history – and one man's courageous choice when the country was on the brink of war and occupation.
Bjørn Sundquist plays Colonel Birger Eriksen when we meet him at Oscarsborg Fortress before the German attack on Norway on April 9, 1940. Colonel Eriksen is an experienced but tired officer, marked by repeated rejections of his attempts to equip a low-priority reserve fortress with few, inexperienced soldiers and old equipment. When reports of unknown ships in the Oslo Fjord come in on the night of April 9, he receives no clear orders from the high command. Therefore, he decides to act quickly and purposefully and prepares his crew to open fire on the cruiser that turns out to be Blücher.
The film alternates between the dramatic hours at Oscarsborg and a lesser-known aftermath in 1946, where Eriksen must defend his choices before a military commission of inquiry. Was his judgment good enough? Was it right to defy military orders and attack a foreign ship? And why was he left alone with the responsibility in the face of the German war machine?
